The Digital Society Podcast 096 with Rank1

Digital Society PodcastRank1

Rank1 Website

They’re one of Europe’s most established, respected dance acts, having been catapulted to stardom by their debut release ‘Airwave’. In the 9 years that have followed they’ve continued to pack out the CD wallets of world’s A-list spinners with speaker-spankers that have included ‘Such is Life’, ‘Symfo’ and ‘Life Less Ordinary’… In 2009 they unleashed ‘L.E.D. There Be Light’ – a track that was quickly snapped up by ID&T as the anthem for that year’s Trance Energy event. As DJs they create floor-quakes before thousands of fans, at clubs, arenas and festivals every single weekend. They are Piet Bervoets & Benno de Goeji… and they’re Rank 1.

Embarking on his production career in 1995, Piet banded together with Carlo Resoort to produce the proto tech-trance hit ‘The Simarillia’. He continued to build the pressure in 1997 under the pseudonym R.O.O.S., creating the contagious riff-monster ‘Instant Moments’. In a studio not that far away, Benno was laying the ground work for his future A-list co-production collaborations with an at-the-time unknown Tiësto. As Kamaya Painters they produced the scene-setting trance classic ‘Endless Wave’, but fate was already conspiring to bring Benno and Piet together…
After a chance introduction at a party in the spring of 1997, the pair recognised much common musical ground and decided to work together. As the Dutch trance dawn rose up over Europe, the pair found themselves faultlessly positioned at its epicentre to reign. Championed by fellow fast-risers Armin van Buuren, Tiësto and Ferry Corsten, in 1999 the stadium-sized sound of ‘Airwave’ sent out an audio shockwave across the continent. It proved to be such a hit that just 12 months later ‘Airwave’ had been released, incredibly, in over 40 countries – jumping into the Top 10 in the UK and becoming the first Dutch track to top the European Dance Chart.

Over recent years, Rank 1 has increasingly come together on stage for their Live performances. They became the first live act to perform at Sensation and famously forced the closure of doors of Trance Energy’s main arena (when 25,000 clubbers packed it out to hear them play). Their kinship with the biggest event in trance music is widely-known and they are the only act to have rocked Trance Energy 3 times! Outside of that Rank 1 has continued to thrill crowds live at some Europe’s best- known festivals including Mystery Land, Sunrise & Nature One.

The Digital Society Podcast 095 with Leon Bolier

Digital Society PodcastLeon Bolier

Leon Bolier Website

A major force in second dawn of The Netherlands’ dance music, Leon Bolier is one of the most creative studio minds at work in the country today. Through his now widely-known ‘trance with a twist’ auditory ethos, he determinedly broke the mould of pre-millennium euphoric trance – rebuilding it with a never-heard-before sound-set. Taking the natural next-step, Bolier has long since brought the music from the studio to the people. Behind a pair of CDJs, he is a force of nature, delivering one sound-quaking performance after another. Playing hundreds of nights, and in front of hundreds of thousands of clubbers, this mission culminated in Leon debuting on DJ Magazine’s Top 100 chart in the autumn of 2008.

With a production ethic that left the industry drop-jawed and clubland reeling, Leon launched his standalone career in 2005. Over the course of the next 12 months he released a head-spinning (and possibly even record–breaking) 17 tracks. These were snapped up by many of Holland’s finest imprints with ‘Poseidon’, ‘My Precious’, ‘Bonaire’ and a multitude others being released on labels including ASOT & Captured. In the first month of 2006 Leon embarked on a label relationship that is now singularly synonymous with his career. ‘Pulsar’ and ‘Solar 1’ were released through the Spinnin Records’ sub-label 2Play, and over the course of the next 3 years Bolier was to put out an extraordinary 20 tracks through the label.

With this impossible-to-miss salvo of productions flowing out of Spinnin’s door, it was no surprise that demand to see Leon behind the turntables mushroomed at much the same pace. Bolier’s innate ability to read the dancefloor and deliver damage-to-order has now become the stuff of legend. Trance Energy, Fabulous and the Amsterdam Dance Events in his homeland all got an early taste for his powerful musical elixir. With word spreading around the globe, Leon fast found himself, headphones-in-hand, rocking countries as far apart as Argentina, Singapore, Mexico, Australia, UK, Egypt and Russia. Gatecrasher, Digital Society, Trance Energy Australia, ID&T’s Tomorrowland, Love Parade Germany, Mondaybar Cruise Sweden and Global Gathering Poland are just some of the instantly recognisable dance institutions he’s now played for.

The Digital Society Podcast 093 with Tritonal

Digital Society PodcastTritonal

Tritonal Website

If success were measured musically, Tritonal would be on the highway to achieving the great American dream. At any given moment, their music is fueling a sing-along through a spin on the stereo airwaves or tearing up a dance floor at a packed club or festival. They have crossed musical and geographical boundaries and amazed us with their production luminaries and captivating live shows. But take of all that apart, and these talented guys just really want to inspire and to be inspired, blessed with the ability and means to do so.

It is this very reason why Dave Reed and Chad Cisneros, two extremely humble individuals from Austin, Texas, combined forces by chance in 2007 to venture into the dance realm. As they would say it, they “complete each other’s musical sentences.” In that process, Tritonal came to life. Within the short span of the last 2 years, they have charged into the arena and have fast-tracked into chalking up more accolades and accomplishments than some producers or DJs ever will in a lifetime. Despite a very crowded and almost overpopulated trance scene, inhabitants of Planet Dance have generously embraced Tritonal. Amidst the great wave of fresh names flooding the dance arena, they manage to stand out with their ability to evolve and accomplish, and they are the best candidates to put America and trance music on the map.

The Digital Society Podcast 092 with John 00 Fleming

Digital Society PodcastJohn 00 Fleming

John 00 Fleming Website

John 00 Fleming is an artist who has achieved international success in a career spanning over 20 years without dishonouring his musical essence or fans. With over 10 million album sales and 30 produced mix compilations, John’s a proven musical pioneer whose essence lies in what his fans call, ‘the J00F sound’. The J00F sound is as unpretentious as the artist, and is best described as deep and textured progressively edged trance, in an electronic dance music style that is an antithesis to what is normally produced within the genre.

In an industry rife in self worship and mirror gazing, John is characterised by a passion and ability to connect audiences by injecting his unique underground musical style, and not his ego, into the mainstream vein. This connection has manifested in ten mix compilations and five singles in the UK Top 40 charts on iconic labels: Virgin, EMI and Warner Music. It has also seen him headline major events worldwide, seeing in over 4000 appearances at the likes of Gatecrasher, Godskitchen, Ministry of Sound, Digital Society and Global Gathering, through to Holland’s Dance Valley, Serbia’s Exit Festival, Brazil’s Exxxperience, Australia’s Future music festivals, Belgium’s Tomorrowland, and the U.S.A’s Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC).
